Introduction
Bufo Alvarius, the Colorado River toad, is more than a meaty and squishy amphibian. It carries venom known as 5-MeO-DMT (5-methoxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine). The venom is extracted from the toad without harming or killing it, then dried and smoked from a pipe. One or two hits of Bufo, and we immediately pass out. What follows is a 10- to 20-minute psychedelic experience.
Smoking toad venom can sound nuts as a psychedelic therapy method for personal and spiritual motives. Some people might argue that it makes no sense to intake venom since it can harm or even kill us.
Before I decided to test Bufo (5-MeO-DMT), I didn’t come across stories of anyone dying, hospitalized, or going crazy. It could be foolish and dangerous to smoke toad venom alone or with folks who don’t understand the ins and outs of the medicine for the first time. Bufo Alvarius is something we consume with an experienced Bufo shaman or healer in a ceremonial ecosystem. It’s what I did in a jungle in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
Let’s fasten our seat belts (we’ll need them) for the 10- to 20-minute ride with the mighty Colorado River toad!
Preparation
I walk around the jungle ceremonial site to ease my nerves. It’s the exact location where I did my first ayahuasca ceremony in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Shaman Edgar, who facilitated my ayahuasca ceremony, is also present, but as the Bufo ceremony facilitator. Juan, the Bufo healer, and his two music healers are setting up the area with shamanic instruments and spiritual items.
I sit on the jungle ground on a yoga mat; Juan sits across, facing me. The breathwork we’re doing has me a little gassed and less apprehensive about taking a hit or two of toad venom. We do more forceful breathwork for ten minutes while the sun sets.
Enter Bufo
The waxing crescent moon is bright white. The fireflies flicker marble-sized red and yellow colors above the two-foot-tall weeds surrounding the circular ceremonial site.
Juan puts the glass pipe containing toad venom in my mouth and lights it up as I sit on the ground with my legs crossed. The jungle and sky shake after taking a hit; everything goes frozen and blurry, while Juan looks like a dark shadow.
He puts the pipe to my mouth again; I take another hit of Bufo. I hold it for a few seconds, I exhale, and now I blackout.
I open my eyes, zeroed in on the sky and stars, feeling shocked. I’m lying down with my back against the ground. I don’t know where Juan, Edgar, and the two music healers went. I’m alone in the dark and silent jungle.
“AHHH,” I moan, stunned that my chest is tightening.
“AHHH,” I moan again in distress.
“Oh my God!” I say in discomfort with my eyes wide open.
I put my hands on my head, squeezing it with my fingertips. I rub my cheeks and face, gripping it with my fingertips, feeling overtaken by the toad venom.
My body is twitching and jerking a little. I strike the ground a few times with my clenched fists and ankles while lying down with my back against the ground. I turn to my left side and slap the ground with my right hand. I turn to my right side and slap the ground with my left hand. Something inside me struggles to release but can’t because of the physiological resistance. I’m under the Bufo spell, unable to think or understand, and with absolutely no control of my mind, body, and soul.
An aggressive rush flows through my body, forcing me to turn to my left side, wanting to get up. All I see is darkness. I feel two hands on my shoulders pushing me downward, physically pressuring me to lay down with my back against the ground again.
“AHHH,” I moan as I remain lying on the jungle ground, laser- focused on the universe above.
The intense sensations running through my body are like an exorcism, unleashing toxic energy, a bad spirit, or demonic force.
“AYI-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAAAAAHHHHH,” rapidly comes out of my mouth in an indigenous tone.
“AYI-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAH-YAAAAAHHHHH,” I repeat indigenously, as if it’s one of my ancestors from another dimension interacting with the cosmos.
I open my mouth, wiggling my tongue from left to right and making popping sounds.
My bodily movements on the ground stop. Everything is soundless. The sky, stars, and the luminescence of the bright-white waxing crescent moon are in front of me.
“OOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH,” I shout humbly and confidently to the universe.
My arms go up to the sky while lying down with my back against the ground.
“I’m sorry to everyone I ever hurt. I didn’t know then what I know now,” I whisper modestly.
Connecting
Euphoria flows in my soul while I observe the bright white waxing crescent moon.
“My zodiac sign is cancer. The moon is my element. I was born on July 18, 1983, 40 years ago,” I announce blissfully as if I’m reborn.
I point at different stars in the sky, playfully looking for patterns to connect the dots, smiling youthfully. I feel taken aback by the peaceful universe.
“The moon, what a beauty,” I say, overjoyed.
I point at the bright white waxing crescent moon, covering it with my right index finger...............
